I am sure you are all aware of the events that took place a few days ago in Orlando, Florida. This is my letter to the victims of that horrific tragedy.
Dear Pulse Victims,
I am so sorry. I am so devastated that this happened to you. I am so sorry that you were robbed of your life because someone made the horrible decision to hate. You all deserved so much better.
I am even more sorry about the people who are using your death to boost their own political or personal agenda. They are using you to argue about ISIS and gun rights and neither is fair to you. I am sorry for these people. They are disregarding your death and it's not right. I understand that for some people this comes as a way of coping with this horrific tragedy. They need someone to blame and I get that. I just hope that in doing so they don't forget about you. You were a victim of a horrible tragedy and deserve to remembered with love, compassion, and respect. So do your families and friends who were left behind.
I don't care whether you were straight, gay, lesbian, bi, transgender, or whatever, you were a PERSON who didn't deserve to die. You were a person, a victim, and should be treated and remembered as such. I am so sorry your night of fun, laughter, music, and celebration was cut short because of hate. I'm sorry you all were a victim of that. I'm sorry that everyone involved that night is left to pick up the pieces after your death. I pray for your families, friends, and love ones as they try to make sense of this senseless act of violence. May they find peace in knowing you all were 100% being yourselves and that you were proud of that. As you should be.
We are all different, but in light of the events that took place we are all the same. We are all one. We are human beings who deserve to be loved and respected. We deserve to live in a country that chooses love over hate; acceptance over judgement. Sadly, this is not the case, as has been proven in recent days. I'm sorry for that.
I hope by writing this letter, I can give you the voice that someone stole from you that night. The voice that demands love, respect, and compassion for you and your loved ones.
I know that this letter will fall on deaf ears and that some will want to argue with me. I hope that is not the case. I hope they choose love, as I have. I hope they choose to remember you were someone's child, someone's friend, someone's everything. I hope they mourn for you as I and most have. I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope you are at peace and I hope you know that you are remembered and were and will always be loved.
Sincerely,
A friend
